Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HCS HB 1000 -- CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS

CO-SPONSORS: Hosmer, Treadway

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Select Committee on
Redistricting by a vote of 12 to 6.

This substitute establishes 9 districts for the election of
representatives to Congress beginning with election to the 108th
Congress. The districts are described by census geography,
counties, voting districts, and tract/blocks in accordance with
the 2000 census. Districts currently in the statutes will
remain in effect for any elections to the 107th Congress and
will expire on January 1, 2003.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the current Congressional
districts need to be revised to conform to the 2000 census.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Hosmer. The
committee held extensive public hearings in Kansas City, Mexico,
Springfield, St. Louis, and Waynesville, with testimony by
numerous citizens and public officials.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
