Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 48 -- FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND EMBALMERS

SPONSOR: Relford

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Professional Registration and Licensing by a vote of 15 to 0.

This bill allows the State Board of Funeral Directors and
Embalmers to issue limited licenses. Limited licenses will be
available for persons wishing to work in funeral establishments
licensed only to perform cremations. Applicants are required to
pay application and examination fees and successfully complete
the Missouri law portion of the funeral director's practical
examination.

The bill also exempts persons with limited licenses from
participating in funeral director apprenticeship programs.

The bill allows the board to grant license extensions to persons
who have allowed their licenses to lapse.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that certain facilities only perform
cremations and persons working there do not embalm. The bill
would allow them to get a limited license to perform cremations
only.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Relford; Missouri
State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors; and Missouri
Funeral Directors Association.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
