HB 553 -- COUNTY BOARD OF EQUALIZATION CO-SPONSORS: Barnett, Hosmer, Richardson, Mayer COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Local Government and Related Matters by a vote of 15 to 1. This bill allows the county commission to appoint 2 additional citizens of the county who are not county officials to serve on the board of equalization. The board currently consists of the county commissioners, the county assessor, the county surveyor, and the county clerk, who serves as secretary of the board without a vote. Citizens appointed to the board may receive compensation if approved by the county commission. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that persons having a problem with an assessment feel intimidated by the current board of equalization. This is not mandatory for counties. Testifying for the bill were Representatives Barnett and Richardson. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
