HB 698 -- REMOVAL OF WEEDS SPONSOR: Luetkenhaus COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Local Government and Related Matters by a vote of 17 to 0. This bill allows a fourth class city in a county of the first classification with a charter form of government to order the abatement of weeds or trash within 5 business days after notice is sent or posted on the property. If the weeds or trash are not removed within 5 days, the city may have them removed and the cost of removal billed on a special tax bill to be collected by the collector with other taxes assessed against the property. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that cities like St. Peters need the ability to force people to maintain their property. Many people don't keep their grass cut and leave trash in their yards. Testifying for the bill was Representative Luetkenhaus. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
