Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 625 -- National Teacher, Speech Language Pathologist, and
Audiologist Certification Incentives

Co-Sponsors: Treadway, Froelker

This bill creates an incentive program to encourage teachers,
speech language pathologists, and audiologists to achieve
national certification. Individuals who have been certified by
the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards or the
American Speech Language Hearing Association may apply for a
bonus by sending a copy of their national certification to the
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The
applicants must first seek reimbursement for costs of
certification from their districts. The department will pay any
portion of the certification that the district does not pay.
One-half of the certification fees will be paid when the
applicant documents that he or she is a candidate and the
remainder upon achieving certification. The initial bonus for
the first year after certification is $5,000; subsequent bonuses
will be $2,500 for the life of the national certificate.
Provisions detailing the administration of the funds are
included, and the department is given authority to promulgate
rules to implement the program.
