HB 1399 -- WORLD WAR II MEDALS CO-SPONSORS: Ransdall, Kreider, Crump, Gratz, Boucher, Ross, Dolan, Merideth, Jetton COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Public Safety, Law Enforcement and Veterans' Affairs by a vote of 17 to 0. This bill changes the deadline for filing applications for World War II medals from January 1, 2002, to January 1, 2003. The bill contains an emergency clause. FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Net Cost to the General Revenue Fund of $528,800 in FY 2003, $0 in FY 2004, and $0 in FY 2005. Estimated Net Effect to the World War II Veterans' Recognition Award Fund is $0 in FY 2003, $0 in FY 2004, and $0 in FY 2000, subject to appropriations. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that while approximately 25,000 veterans had filed an application to receive a medal by the January 1, 2002, deadline, there are approximately 100,000 veterans in the state still eligible to receive a medal. Several hundred applications have been filed since the January 1, 2002 deadline and many more are expected. Supporters would like to extend the deadline to give eligible veterans additional time to be recognized under this program. Testifying for the bill were Representative Ransdall; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Missouri Association of Veterans Organizations; and Office of the Adjutant General. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee. Dana Estes, Legislative AnalystCopyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
