HCS HB 1539 -- DRIVER'S LICENSE SPONSOR: Monaco COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Judiciary by a vote of 10 to 6. Under current law, a person cannot receive a hardship driver's license if the person has received one in the last five years. This substitute reduces the time for a previous hardship license to the last two years. The substitute also requires that points against a driver's license holder be assessed at the time of a conviction or for forfeiture of collateral. Currently, points are assessed only after a conviction or forfeiture of collateral. FISCAL NOTE: Not available at time of printing. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that in rural areas of the state, often there are no means of transportation other than personal vehicles to get to and from a place of employment. The bill will help keep people from driving illegally. Testifying for the bill was Representative Clayton. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
