HCS SCS SB 1212 -- NATIONAL GUARD
SPONSOR: Mathewson (Ransdall)
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Education-Higher by a vote of 14 to 0.
Current law makes students at public higher education
institutions who are members of the armed forces reserves and are
called to active service under certain circumstances eligible for
tuition refunds or for a grade of "incomplete." This substitute
makes students who are members of the National Guard similarly
eligible for the refunds or grade.
The substitute also authorizes the creation of an additional
assistant adjutant position.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that with the National Guard being
called upon to perform duties such as guarding airports and with
the likelihood of the increased level of security requiring more
call-ups and for longer periods of time, members of the National
Guard need to have the same privilege as member of the reserves.
The authorization for an additional assistant adjutant position
permits the Guard to access federal funds for the new position.
Testifying for the bill were Senator Mathewson; and Missouri
National Guard Association.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
