HCS SCS SB 1259 -- FOOD RECOVERY PROGRAM

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Children,
Families and Health by a vote of 13 to 3.
This substitute creates a food recovery program for specified
eating establishments for the purpose of providing excess canned
or perishable food to needy persons in Missouri. Specified
eating establishments and charitable organizations are required
to make reasonable efforts to collect and distribute the foods.
The Department of Health and Senior Services is required to
prepare a report which summarizes the efforts of the food
recovery program and makes legislative recommendations. The
report will be submitted to the Governor, Speaker of the House of
Representatives, and the President Pro Tem of the Senate by
November 1, 2003.
FISCAL NOTE: Not available at time of printing.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the substitute would promote and
establish an excess food distribution program for needy persons
in Missouri.
Testifying for the bill were Senator Loudon; Stephanie Golmon;
and Shannon Steele.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
