Whereas, antibiotics have saved lives for more than 50 years; and
Whereas, antibiotics are an important weapon against infectious bacterial diseases that harm children, senior citizens, and persons of all ages and walks of life; and
Whereas, antibiotic overuse has lead to antibiotic resistance that is destroying antibiotic effectiveness, turning illnesses once easily treated into life threatening infections; and
Whereas, the bacterium that is the leading cause of pneumonia, which can also cause meningitis and many ear infections, has developed resistance to penicillin in many cases; and
Whereas, bacteria continue to develop resistance to penicillin and other classes of antibiotics at an alarming pace; and
Whereas, the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) presented in the Findings and Conclusions of the Report of the ASM Task Force on Antibiotic Resistance that treating antibiotic resistance in people costs Americans more than 4 billion dollars annually; and
Whereas, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Annals of Internal Medicine have published recommendations for health care professionals regarding best practices for the judicious use of antibiotics, and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is engaged in an effort to track antibiotic resistance and encourage appropriate antibiotic use:
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the members of the House of Representatives of the Ninety-first General Assembly, Second Regular Session, the Senate concurring therein, hereby endorse the recommendations of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics, urge health care professionals in Missouri to adopt the recommendations in their practice and formularies, urge the citizens of the State of Missouri to talk with their health care practitioners about wise antibiotic use, and encourage the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to continue its effort to educate the citizens of the State of Missouri and health care providers about the appropriate use of antibiotics; and
Be it further resolved that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives be instructed to prepare a
properly inscribed copy of this resolution for the Director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior
