REP. SAM BERKOWITZ

91st General Assembly

 

Rep. Sam Berkowitz, a Democrat, represents Clark, Knox, Lewis, Schuyler and Scotland counties (District 1) in the Missouri House of Representatives.

 

Prior to his election, Rep. Berkowitz was a teacher and coach. He served as a football, basketball and track coach in Schuyler, Scotland and Clark counties.

 

He is a member of the Highway 136 Corridor Coalition and the Highway 61 Corridor Coalition.

 

In 1982 Rep. Berkowitz founded and operated KMEM radio where he handled sales and the daily operations until 1990.

 

A 1964 graduate of Plainedge High School, Long Island, N.Y., Rep. Berkowitz attended Nassau Community College, Long Island, before completing his studies in 1970 at Truman State University (formerly Northeast Missouri State University) with a bachelor of science in education.  He currently holds teaching certificates in history, journalism, health and physical education. He served as a volunteer head football coach during the 2000 season at Clark County R-I High School.

 

Rep. Berkowitz has received numerous honors including, the first ever, Broadcaster of the Year award, presented by the Missouri Broadcasters Association in 1988.  Other awards include Tri-Rivers Conference track coach of the year, Clark Co. R-I Teacher of the Year, Kiwanis, and the MSTA Broadcasters award while operating KMEM radio. Rep. Berkowitz also recently received the Outstanding Service and Dedication award from the Missouri Alzheimer's Coalition.

 

Born July 6, 1946, in New York, NY, Rep. Berkowitz currently resides in Memphis, Mo., with his wife, Sheila. They have a daughter, Caryn, who lives in Columbia.
