HCS HB 253 -- PROTECTION ORDERS SPONSOR: Byrd (Shoemaker, 8) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Judiciary by a vote of 18 to 0. This substitute eliminates, effective January 1, 2004, any requirement that petitioners for protection orders provide their Social Security numbers on petitions or case documents. The courts may require petitioners to provide their number on confidential case sheets. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill is necessary to protect petitioners for protection orders from further harassment and possible identity theft. Testifying for the bill were Representatives Shoemaker (8) and Fraser; and Missouri Coalition Against Domestic Violence. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
