Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HCS HB 253 -- PROTECTION ORDERS

SPONSOR: Byrd (Shoemaker, 8)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Judiciary by a vote of 18 to 0.

This substitute eliminates, effective January 1, 2004, any
requirement that petitioners for protection orders provide their
Social Security numbers on petitions or case documents. The
courts may require petitioners to provide their number on
confidential case sheets.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill is necessary to protect
petitioners for protection orders from further harassment and
possible identity theft.

Testifying for the bill were Representatives Shoemaker (8) and
Fraser; and Missouri Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
