Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 697 -- SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION

CO-SPONSORS: Mayer, Jolly, Pratt, Merideth, Bringer, Hubbard,
Cooper (120), Bruns

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass federal mandate" by the
Committee on Crime Prevention and Public Safety by a vote of 15
to 0.

Current law requires the county sheriff to forward the county's
sex offender registration list to the law enforcement agencies of
any city, town, or village in the county. This bill requires the
list to be forwarded to the law enforcement agency for any
college or university located within the county.

The bill also requires sex offenders to include in their
registration information whether they are enrolled in a college
and to update their registration information within seven days of
changing their enrollment or employment with a college within the
state.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the state risks losing a
significant amount of federal grant money if it does not comply
with these new requirements.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Mayer; and Department
of Public Safety.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
