HCS HB 97 -- LAW ENFORCEMENT SALES TAX SPONSOR: Johnson (90) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Local Government by a vote of 17 to 0. This substitute authorizes Jefferson County, upon voter approval, to impose by ordinance a retail sales tax of up to 0.05% for law enforcement services. The substitute requires 25% of the sales tax revenue collected to be deposited into the county prosecuting attorney's office sales tax trust fund and to be used solely by the county prosecuting attorney's office. The substitute contains an emergency clause. FISCAL NOTE: Income to General Revenue Fund of Unknown in FY 2004, FY 2005, and FY 2006. Oversight assumes income to be less than $100,000 annually. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that Jefferson County needs funds for additional law enforcement. The area has grown, and existing law enforcement officials cannot do an adequate job. Seventy-five percent of the area is unincorporated and depends on the county for law enforcement. Testifying for the bill were Representative Johnson (90); and Sheriff of Jefferson County. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee. Steve Bauer, Legislative AnalystCopyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
