Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 297 -- American Sign Language

Co-Sponsors: Stevenson, Bean, Smith (14)

This bill requires that courses in American Sign Language offered
by any educational institution be recognized as foreign language
courses, that credit be given for these courses if the school
gives academic credit for foreign languages, and that these
courses count toward satisfaction of foreign language
requirements of the school. Credit can be earned by achieving a
passing grade in a course or by demonstrating proficiency. The
Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will provide
