HB 637 -- Records Co-Sponsors: Brooks, Salva, Skaggs, Johnson (61), El-Amin, Page, Holand, Parker This bill makes several changes to the laws governing the theft or destruction of government documents. The bill amends the crime of stealing, a class C felony, by including within the offense the theft of a government document or a document of historical significance. The bill amends the crime of library theft by: (1) Including within the definition of "library" any museum and any archive or repository of government records; (2) Including within the offense the damaging of any library material; (3) Increasing the penalty for the theft of library material that is worth less than $500, from a class C misdemeanor to a class A misdemeanor; and (4) Making the theft of library material worth more than $25,000 a class B felony. The bill amends the crime of tampering with a public record by: (1) Increasing the penalty for the offense from a class A misdemeanor to a class D felony; and (2) Including within the offense the failure of a civil or military officer to deliver to his or her successor all of the records of the office.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
