Rep. Sharon
Sanders Brooks, a Democrat, represents part of Jackson County (District 37) in
the Missouri House of Representatives.
Elected to the
House in a special election held in April 2000, Rep. Sanders Brooks is an
historical consultant. Formerly she was
a civil rights investigator, investigating employment and fair housing
discrimination complaints in Kansas City.
She was also a journalist in Kansas City.
Rep. Sanders
Brooks is a member of the Association for the Study of African American Life
and History, Inc. (ASALH); Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; the National
Political Congress of Black Women, Inc; the Missouri Historical Society; the
Missouri Legislative Black Caucus; N.A.A.C.P.; Women Legislators of Missouri,
vice president; United Minority Media Association; Democratic Leadership Council;
Freedom Inc.; Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association, board member; and
the National Black Caucus of State Legislators.
A graduate of
Francis L. Cardozo High School in Washington D.C., Rep. Sanders Brooks attended
Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C. and received a bachelor of arts degree in
journalism from The American University in Washington, D.C., in 1983.

in Lynchburg, Va., Rep. Sanders Brooks lives in Kansas City. She is a volunteer for the 18th
& Vine Museums also purchases clothing items for foster care children and
attends St. James United Methodist Church.
