HCS HB 1215 -- ESCAPE FROM COMMITMENT SPONSOR: Mayer (Engler) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Crime Prevention and Public Safety by a vote of 10 to 0. This substitute makes it a class D felony for a person who has been civilly committed as a sexual predator to escape from commitment. The substitute contains an emergency clause. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2005, FY 2006, and FY 2007. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill corrects an oversight made when the law creating the sexual predator civil commitment process was enacted several years ago. Under current law, a person civilly committed as a sexually violent predator cannot be charged with the crime of escape. Testifying for the bill were Representative Engler; and Office of the Attorney General. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
