Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 1235, HCA 1 -- LOCAL MUSEUM SALES TAX

SPONSOR:  Schaaf

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Tax Policy
by a vote of 13 to 4.

This bill allows Andrew County, upon voter approval, to impose a
sales tax not to exceed one-fifth of 1% on all retail sales
within the county to be used solely for museums.  The bill
defines a museum that will qualify for the tax revenue and the
method of collecting the tax.  The bill outlines a procedure for
establishing a museum board if one does not currently exist.  The
bill also establishes a procedure for voter repeal of a museum
tax.

HCA 1 -- Makes technical changes related to the collection and
distribution of the local sales tax by the Department of Revenue.

FISCAL NOTE:  Not available at time of printing.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that this authority to establish a
local sales tax in Andrew County to help finance their museum is
greatly needed.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Schaaf.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
