Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HCS HB 1265 -- CAMPAIGN INFORMATION DISCLOSURE

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Elections
by a vote of 9 to 0.

This substitute requires any individual, acting on his or her own
behalf or representing any business or committee other than a
candidate or party committee, who purchases print advertising,
purchases or causes any matter to be transmitted on a broadcast
station, or hires a professional phone bank to make calls
regarding or relative to any candidate for public office to fill
out and sign a form to be prepared by the Missouri Ethics
Commission listing certain information.

FISCAL NOTE:  Not available at time of printing.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that candidates should be able to
find out who is sponsoring advertisements about them.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Wildberger.

OPPONENTS:  Those who oppose the bill say that the state
shouldn't mandate that a private industry act as a police force.

Testifying against the bill was Missouri Broadcasters
Association.
