HCS HB 1628 -- BUSINESS LICENSE TAX SPONSOR: Dempsey (Stefanick) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Job Creation and Economic Development by a vote of 19 to 1 with 2 present. Under current law, a business license tax up to $10,000 may be imposed by villages with less than 1,300 inhabitants. This substitute increases that limit to $15,000. FISCAL NOTE: Not available at time of printing. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that when this law was passed in 2003, it was intended to prevent Claycomo from charging the Ford Motor Company an exorbitant business license tax, but the Village of Twin Oaks also has less than 1,300 inhabitants and has one business that currently pays almost $15,000 per year for its business license tax. The bill is necessary to allow Twin Oaks to continue collecting the same amount from this business without affecting Claycomo. Testifying for the bill were Representative Stefanick; and Village of Twin Oaks. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
