HB 994 -- THIRTIETH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT SPONSOR: Cunningham (145) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Judiciary by a vote of 15 to 0. Under current law, a surcharge up to $10 may be collected as costs in all criminal proceedings filed in the 30th Judicial Circuit if the surcharge was authorized by a county or municipal government order, ordinance, or resolution adopted prior to January 1, 1997. This bill removes the restriction that the authorizing order, ordinance, or resolution must have been adopted prior to January 1, 1997. The bill also extends the sunset date for this section from January 1, 2005, to January 1, 2010. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the extension of the sunset date is necessary to ensure continued funding for the circuit juvenile detention center. Testifying for the bill was Representative Cunningham (145). OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
