Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1245 -- Peace Officers

Sponsor:  Schlottach

This bill establishes a process for obtaining a temporary peace
officer license. Applicants must have completed at least one
year of peace officer work, which may be as a reserve officer, a
certified peace officer, or a similar position in the military;
completed at least 120 hours of law enforcement training; and
have an offer of employment from a law enforcement agency. The
Department of Public Safety must establish a procedure for the
issuing of these licenses. A temporary license will be valid for
one year and will allow the temporary officer to work up to 120
hours during that year. Temporary officers must work at least 36
hours per quarter and must be accompanied at all times by a
licensed officer or a training officer. Upon completing 120
hours of work, the temporary officer may take a test for the
regular peace officer license, without receiving additional
training. Once obtaining a regular license, the officer will be
required to receive 24 hours of continuing education every three
years.
