Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1482 -- Police Officer Residency Requirements

Sponsor: Portwood

This bill prohibits the City of St. Louis from requiring police
officers with at least seven years experience to reside in the
city. The seven years of employment as a police officer must be
consecutive, but may include part-time employment. The bill also
prohibits the city from discriminating against any nonresident
peace officer. The city may require a peace officer to reside in
Missouri as a condition of employment. The city may provide
incentives, such as housing supplements or vehicle-use
guidelines, to encourage peace officers to reside in the city,
but may not authorize the use of department property as an
incentive.
