HB 618 -- STATE HIGHWAY PATROL PERSONNEL SPONSOR: Bearden COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Transportation by a vote of 12 to 0. Currently, the State Highway Patrol can have no more than 25 captains, 60 lieutenants, and a total of 965 officers and patrolmen. This bill exempts from those caps the members assigned to the Division of Drug and Crime Control. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on General Revenue Fund in FY 2006, FY 2007, and FY 2008. Estimated Effect on Other State Funds of an Income of $0 to a Cost of Unknown in FY 2006, FY 2007, and FY 2008. Could exceed $100,000 annually. Subject to appropriation. PROPONENTS: Supporters say the bill will exclude the members of the Division of Drug and Crime Control for purposes of the cap on patrol members and help the patrol better manage and place patrolmen.
