HB 1509 -- DIVISION OF FIRE SAFETY SPONSOR: Bruns COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Crime Prevention and Public Safety by a vote of 12 to 0. This bill expands the duties of the State Fire Marshal in the Division of Fire Safety within the Department of Public Safety to include the training of inspectors and public or private employees or volunteers in the field of emergency response, rescue, and fire prevention or preparedness. The State Fire Marshal is also required to establish and maintain a voluntary training and certification program based upon nationally recognized standards and is authorized to promulgate rules and regulations in order to administer the provisions. FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Income on General Revenue Fund of $28,333 in FY 2007, $34,000 in FY 2008, and $34,000 in FY 2009. No impact on Other State Funds in FY 2007, FY 2008, and FY 2009. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the Division of Fire Safety has implemented a successful certification and training program. The bill allows the division to codify the authority to continue current practices and to establish rules and fees regarding the program.
