Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1237 -- Scholarship Program

Sponsor: Cooper (158)

This bill establishes a scholarship program for the surviving
children of veterans killed in combat if the veteran was a
Missouri resident upon entering the military and at the time of
his or her death. The veteran's death must be a result of combat
or an illness that was or could have been contracted while
serving in combat.

The Coordinating Board for Higher Education will award up to 25
scholarships annually. A surviving child must be certified as
eligible by a Missouri state veterans service officer. A
surviving child is eligible to receive this scholarship until age
25.

Each scholarship will include full tuition, a room and board
allowance of up to $2,000 per semester, and the actual cost of
books up to $500 per semester. The scholarship will be reduced
by the amount of other financial aid awarded the student so that
he or she does not receive more than 100% of the cost of tuition
and books when combined with all available funds.

The provisions of the bill will expire six years from the
effective date.
