Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 527 -- CORPORATE NAME RESERVATIONS

SPONSOR: Cooper (120)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Judiciary
by a vote of 9 to 1.

Currently, the Secretary of State reserves a corporate name for
an applicant's exclusive use for a 60-day period. This bill
extends that holding period to a maximum of 180 days from the
date of the first application and prohibits the name from being
placed back in a reserve status.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2008, FY 2009, and
FY 2010.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill will clarify the state
policy for corporate name reservations for not-for-profit
companies. Currently, for-profit corporations are bound by the
180-day reserve status period. The bill will make the not-for-
profit and for-profit corporate name reservation process uniform.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Cooper (120); and
Office of Secretary of State.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
