Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1217 -- Unlawful Use of Weapons

Sponsor: Jones (89)

This bill exempts all qualified retired peace officers from the
crime of unlawful use of weapons. For purposes of the bill, a
qualified retired peace officer is any individual who retired in
good standing from service with a public agency as a peace
officer. The individual must have been, before retirement,
regularly employed for 15 years; authorized by law to engage in
or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation,
prosecution of, or the incarceration of any person for any
violation of law; and had statutory powers of arrest. The bill
requires the retired peace officer to have met, within the last
year, the standards for training and qualification for active
peace officers to carry firearms. Photographic identification,
issued by the agency from which the peace officer retired, must
be carried by the individual to qualify for the exemption.
