Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1237 -- Funding for Transportation

Sponsor:  St. Onge

This bill increases funding for transportation by:

(1)  Increasing the gas tax by an additional four cents per
gallon;

(2)  Increasing the diesel tax by an additional six cents per
gallon;

(3)  Increasing a car registration by $15;

(4)  Increasing a truck registration by $20;

(5)  Levying a 2% retail sales tax on motor fuel; and

(6)  Authorizing a .5% increase in the general sales tax.

Moneys derived from these increases will be distributed annually
as follows:

(1)  $600 million for the cost of constructing, widening,
reconstructing, maintaining, resurfacing, and repairing
Interstate 70;

(2)  $8,300,000 for public mass transit;

(3)  $7 million for locating, relocating, establishing,
acquiring, constructing, planning, developing, maintaining, or
operating ports; and

(4)  $96,500,000 for locating, relocating, establishing,
acquiring, reimbursing, constructing, improving, and maintaining
roads in the state highway system.

The provisions of the bill will expire December 31, 2013.
