HB 721 -- Election Requirements

This bill changes the laws regarding election requirements.  In
its main provisions, the bill:

(1)  Allows employees of election authorities to live outside the
jurisdiction of the election authority;

(2)  Allows candidates for municipal offices to take office
without an election if the number of candidates is equal to the
number of available positions for the office;

(3)  Removes the requirement that party emblems be printed on
ballots above the party caption and repeals all provisions
regarding emblem selection and placement; and

(4)  Changes the filing deadline for write-in candidates so that
election authorities must notify filing officers of write-in
candidates by 5:00 p.m. on the sixth Friday before election day.
Write-in candidates for state or federal office must file their
intent to run with the Secretary of State by 5:00 p.m. on the
sixth Friday before election day.
