AN ACT

To amend chapter 173, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to American studies.




Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows:


            Section A. Chapter 173, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto one new section, to be known as section 173.910, to read as follows:

            173.910. 1. In order to promote an understanding of American history and culture, students entering public institutions of higher education in this state after January 1, 2008, and thereafter shall, as a requisite for graduation, complete at a minimum one three-credit-hour course in either American History I or American History II; and one three-credit-hour course in either American Literature I or American Literature II. In both cases, the other course shall be offered as a three-credit-hour elective if it is not required.

            2. American History I shall include study of United States history from the colonial beginnings to approximately 1900. American History II shall include study of United States history from approximately 1900 to the present. American Literature I shall include study of major American authors from the colonial beginnings to approximately 1860. American Literature II shall include study of major American authors from approximately 1860 to the present. The four courses shall have these or equivalent course titles. The four courses may be transferred for credit from institutions of higher education in the United States, but not from foreign institutions.

            3. The coordinating board of higher education shall monitor and report compliance with this subsection.
